If you own a building in Austin, you know that publicly sharing its energy usage data has become compulsory through the Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure (ECAD) ordinance. If you hadn’t already been thinking about the cost and environmental implications of energy use within your building, it’s now on your radar thanks to ECAD.

Perhaps you’ve thought beyond the yearly submittal of your building’s energy data. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about what you can do to minimize your building’s energy usage and operating costs and how you can effectively monitor resource use within your building. Perhaps you already use Energy Star Portfolio Manager—you can now apply this information toward LEED certification.

If you’ve ever wondered how your building compares to similar buildings around the world, or wanted to track your building’s energy use, water consumption, waste generation, and more, all in one place, Arc is the tool you need to be using.

What is Arc?

Arc is a scoring platform that tracks your building’s performance across five categories: energy, water, waste, transportation and human experience. The Arc team has generated an estimated energy score by analyzing the information you’ve submitted to meet the ECAD ordinance requirements along with estimated building occupancy values. Of the 3,100 buildings reporting data in Austin, 2,700 buildings had viable data required to generate a score, including energy usage data (either kWh/sqft or Site EUI in kBTU/sqft) and total floor area of the building. Based on these assumptions, a significant number of buildings would meet the energy performance prerequisite for LEED v4.1 O+M.

Access to Arc is free—get started on your path to LEED certification.

Buildings are a significant strain on the environment, from carbon emissions resulting from their energy use, to water consumption, to waste generation to emissions associated with occupants’ mode of travel to and from the building. Buildings also have an impact on individual occupants’ comfort and health. Improvements can be made in each of these areas by measuring the baseline impact and then continually monitoring, adjusting and improving.
